One of my greatest childhood memories is when my mother would round up my older brother, younger sister and me for a shopping adventure to the Rosewood Drive “Piggly Wiggly” located in Columbia, South Carolina. We couldn’t wait to see the “Pig!”…and of course the candy at the checkout line as we waited for Mrs. Freeman to check us out (the only checkout lady we would use, no matter how long her line was.) The Piggly Wiggly was where we got our food so we would grow up strong and as far as I knew the Pig was the only place that could make that happen. As I grew, I finally learned that the checkout slip we signed actually had to be paid for later, a lesson I understood real fast from my father after an adventure of my own one afternoon to the Pig with several friends. We had stocked up our bicycle baskets with all sorts of goodies in our “Pig” bags. The Piggly Wiggly and the “Pig bags” have always been in my life (we used the bags to store our Greenbacks!) and the Piggly Wiggly PFC card is the ONLY VIP card I carry in my wallet!
Today as an artist in Charleston, S.C.; as I covered my art table with Piggly Wiggly paper bags to keep from making a mess (using only recyclable items was my thought) I realized from the abstract art that was created on the “Pig Bags” from the droppings of paint “what a great concept it would be to actually “paint” a low country scene on a Piggly Wiggly grocery bag and share a part of my talent and memories with all.” Therefore, I hope you enjoy what I have created using Piggly Wiggly grocery bags and the original painting on them of low country scenes that I am surrounded by every day in South Carolina.
